Josephine Fischer

About the artist
Josephine Fischer is a documentary photographer and printmaker from Inglewood, California, currently based in San Francisco where she’s studying photography. Her work centers on themes of family, the idea of home and culture within the Black diaspora. Her photography can be characterized by her fly on the wall approach to shooting and a combination of harsh flash and saturated colors. She began her shooting her ongoing series "Thanksgiving in Springfield", examining her grandparents home in Missouri, where her Dad lived during adolescence in 2024. This was monumental because despite being close with her grandparents, this was her first time visiting them. Her father's apprehension towards returning for so long came from him not wanting her and her sister to be exposed to certain dysfunctional family dynamics his siblings and parents had under one roof. Since returning though, he’s expressed regret about not going sooner, thus becoming a new tradition.
